SG Flensburg Handewitt Champions League Winner 2014

The largest handball event in the world, the Champions League Cup, took place in Cologne May 30 and June 1. It was hosted in the Lanxess Arena, which is the largest Multi-Funktion Arena in Europe with a capacity of 19 500 spectators.

The first semifinal was between MKB-MVM Vesprem and THW Kiel. Semifinal 2 between FC Barcelona and SG Flensburg Handewitt.

THW Kiel managed to win against MKB-MVM Vesprem and in the second semifinal it was the SG Flensburg Handewitt who was celebrated as the winning team. The SG was six goals behind with only 8 minutes left of the match, but managed to fight its way back into the game and even it out.

After an extension of 10 minutes it was still a tie, and the match had to be decided by penalty shootout. SG goalie Mattias Andersson saved one of the five shots and all SG players scored a goal – the SG could celebrate making it to the final game against THW Kiel on Sunday.

In the first half of the final it seemed like THW Kiel was going to live up to its expectations. But once again, the SG Flensburg Handewitt fought their way back into the game, and were only two goals behind at half time. In the second half the THW lost speed, and with five minutes left the SG was in fact leading with 4 goals and did win the final with 30-28.

The spectators witnessed complete euphoria as the players and fans stormed the field celebrating the first Champions League Title in the Club History of SG Flensburg Handewitt.
