Cup defender SG Flensburg Handewitt won the DHB-Pokal semifinal against Rhein Neckar Löwen after extension with 31:30 (26:26, 14:12). Despite the burden of the Champions League quarter-finals against Kielce (Poland), Flensburg could gather their forces and fought their way to victory.

On Sunday, however, the SC Magdeburg retaliated for the defeat against SG Flensburg Handewitt in the final of 2015. After 60 minutes of play, the scoreboard showed 30:32. Flensburg had lost the final.

"We must recognize Magdeburg performance. They deserved to win. It is of course bitter. We did not at all reach the level of performance to which we usually do."
